L239 Blue Black "Panaque" *
Baryancistrus Beggini
Wild - From Colombia
(*Definitely not a Panaque)
Size: 8cm+ Full grown adults
Max Adult Size: 8cm+
Temperature Range: 26-30 C
PH Range: 5.5 – 7.5
Can tolerate harder water.
Diet: The best foods for these are Pleco Pops (General or Algae Grazer) or Repashy Soilent Green and Super Green. These are grazers which feast on periphyton ("aufwuchs") and algae as well as anything else that happens to drift by. We've found Baryancistrus are quite fond of courgette, peas, mushrooms and sweet potato as well. Cucumber and lettuce aren't nutritious enough.
Habitat: These are from calmer parts of the river than L200 but they're still from more fast flowing areas - think rounded pebbles and fallen wood with fast flow in between. They quite like being upside down, so lateral caves and overhangs made of chunky slate pieces are useful.
They do appreciate a good supply of oxygen to match their warmer temperature preference. We recommend a very mature aquarium for these, ideally tanks that have been running over a year. They need a hearty layer of algae, biofilm and microinvertebrates to really thrive.
Being a smaller species they can be a little shy, but we've found they come out a lot more with "dither fish" (oddly enough larger tetras seem to work better than smaller ones, maybe due to their eyesight?) as well as maybe a few very bold plecos like the odd Bristlenose to give them confidence especially when it comes to food.
They really appreciate small piles of rocks/pebbles with space in between them towards the front of the tank. If there are other fish on the food already they will come out and feed.
